Cecilia van Zyl, LCSW, Psychotherapist & Substance Abuse Specialist

Cecilia is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker trained in Motivational Interviewing and has worked in the Substance Abuse field since 2002. Until 2004 Cecilia worked on clinical research studies focusing on helping to motivate individuals to adopt healthy behaviors such as smoking cessation and medication adherence for HIV/AIDS clients. In 2004 Cecilia started training university faculty and staff on how to conduct brief interventions using Motivational Interviewing. She has since branched out and conducted trainings at conferences, Mid-Atlantic universities, and other counseling centers. Cecilia is part of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT). Besides substance abusing clients Cecilia provides brief interventions for clients who experience mood disorders, anxiety, eating disorders, PTSD, or grief, and conducts group therapy. Cecilia has taught a graduate clinical practicum class, and a class on Substance Abuse Interventions with Diverse Populations; she is a guest speaker in numerous classes. While working in a University Counseling Center Cecilia has provided Brief Substance Abuse Interventions trainings and consultations to staff and pre-doctoral interns and had used Motivational Interviewing techniques in clinical supervision. She served on the Virginia Association of Alcohol & Drug Abuse Counselors (VAADAC) board.
